Choose Your Adventure!  Reserve your ticket for a ICBEM excursion

The ICBEM local organizing and program committee invite attendees to continue discussion and enjoy an excursion on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Both tours will meet up for lunch together in one location to allow for additional networking.

Thanks to sponsorship by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and ICBEM 2024, all tour prices have been reduced to $25 USD per person. Advance RSVP by September 5th is required; space is limited, so reserve early!.  

If you are interested in participating in an excursion, you may add it at the time of registration.  If you have already registered to attend, please send an email to icbem@brainenergymetabolism.org with the tour name and the number of tickets needed, then we will send you an invoice with a link to pay via credit card.  

Your response is needed to guarantee your preferred excursion. Your space on a tour is not confirmed until your ticket has been paid in full.

Predjama Castle

10:00 - 5:30 PM Castle Excursion 

A mere few kilometers from Postojna Cave, the Karst world offers an unforgettable experience in the fairytale world of knights. The impregnable medieval marvel has been perched in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff for more than 800 years. Behind the largest cave castle in the world, there is a network of secret tunnels, from where the knight Erazem of Predjama would set out on his plundering expeditions. The Cave under Predjama Castle is the home of a colony of bats.

Natural elements seamlessly interwoven with manmade ones, the result of man's work and nature's creativity has created a pearl of medieval resourcefulness. The world's largest cave castle, listed as one of the Guinness World Records, tells a picturesque story about the times when comfort had to give way to safety, and when the clatter of weapons would often drown out troubadours' songs. It is so special and unique, it ranks among the ten most fascinating castles in the world, and so romantic that many couples choose it for their wedding vows.

Karst Cave Tour

8:00 AM - 5:30 PM  

Škocjan Caves Regional Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is home to an exceptional limestone cave system which comprises one of the world's largest known underground river canyons which was cut into the limestone bedrock by the Reka River.

Along its course, the river suddenly disappears into the karst underground, before passing through a vast and picturesque channel of up to 150 meters in height and more than 120 meters in width, often in the form of dramatically roaring rapids and waterfalls.  The vast underground halls and chambers of the cave system expose stunning variations of limestone bedrock and secondary cave formations. Karst research has its origin in this very part of Slovenia, which is scientifically referred to as "Classical Karst".

We will have a 2-hour tour of this extremely special and picturesque cave. In any case, we must not forget the appropriate equipment (sports jacket, hiking shoes), as the cave will be about 10°C (50°F) and humid.
